Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3)
In 2013, the EPA Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) program will recommence for all public water systems serving more than 10,000 users. In addition, 800 systems serving less than 10,000 users will also be required to participate in the program. This testing will take place over a continuous, 12-month period between January 2013 and December 2015. The UCMR program allows the EPA Office of Water to screen the country's water systems for a select number of pollutants that may become regulated contaminants in the future. Unlike the previous round, there is no tiered system for the upcoming monitoring period. Therefore, the list of methods and compound classifications that ALL systems will be required to monitor include:

In addition to these classifications, a targeted subset of 800 Public Water Systems serving 1000 or fewer people may be required to conduct pre-screen testing for two types of viruses over a continuous, 12-month period between January 2013 through December 2015. These viral classifications are Enteroviruses and Noroviruses; the specific analytical method has yet to be named for these viruses but the testing will be based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology.
BSK Laboratories has been part of the UCMR program since the beginning. Our laboratory has provided testing services for the two previous rounds of the program - UCMR 1 and UMCR 2 - and will be certified for the upcoming 2013-2015 program (UCMR 3). The laboratory is currently completing the necessary steps for the certification and will be online at the onset of the program. With the limited capacity available for these test methods, particularly the PCR techniques, water systems are strongly encouraged to secure their spot to ensure compliance with the forthcoming edition of the UCMR program.
For questions regarding this program, please contact our UCMR Project Consultant at 800-877-8310 or via e-mail at ucmr_help@bskinc.com.
